"Something Else"
Sundays during the school year.
10:15 – 11:15 in the middle school
youth room.
Ran by a GLC parent team: Anthony & Renee Riani.
What is "Something Else?"
Just that, it's something else. It's NOT a confirmation class. It's NOT a bible study. It's
NOT a predefined curriculum.
It IS Fun! It IS interesting! It is ENGAGING!
Using the Bible as our reference, we explore our world and try our best to answer some
pretty tough questions. Our goal for Something Else is to explore our beliefs, views, world,
life and that of our church in a freeform forum.
We do have a basic structure along with a "reward" system. Participants earn points for
several different things:
1. just showing up
2. bringing their bible
3. bringing a friend (which we ENCOURAGE)
4. closing prayer
Points become "tickets" for the end of year closing party. We have many different gifts/
prizes we distribute on tables. Each participant can take any number of tickets and enter
them into the drawing for a particular item. We choose a participant to draw a winner for a
particular prize which keeps it completely random.
We open with attendance, and record points earned for each participant. We do "good week/
bad week", where everyone (including us) has a chance to share their week if they like. At
that point it's not anything goes, but almost. We may pickup on conversation from previous
class, or may begin a new one. Occasionally we'll explore someone's good/bad week
together.
In every discussion, we refer to the Bible to see what it has to say about that particular
discussion. Most weeks, the hour we're together flys by!
Something Else is a requirement for Confirmation. We feel it is invaluable in faith
formation. It's an open forum where no question is wrong, too tough or embarrassing. We
cherish our young adults and really look forward to "next week's discussion". Along with
your child, would welcome you to come and... visit, share, participate. |
