On March 7, 2010, 189 members gathered to vote on affiliation with the ELCA.

To maintain integrity, the sanctuary was cleared and members were asked to sign in to receive an official ballot.  Authentication procedures were implemented to ensure only official ballots were counted.

The following motion was made and seconded:

"Resolved, that Geneva Lutheran Church seeks to terminate its relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and therefore this congregation will enter into a process of discernment with the bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod, beginning March 7, 2010 and lasting not less than 90 days, to determine whether or not to terminate our relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America"

After about an hour of discussion, the vote was called.

109 in favor
80 opposed

The motion did not pass, as 126 in favor votes were required.
