Affiliation Member Letter Posted by: Anthony Riani Posted: 4-10-2010
The following letter was mailed to every active member household... Dear Member, In August, 2009, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted and approved a social statement on human sexuality and changes in ministry policies. Anticipating there might be some interest, our September council meeting included an open forum in which we recognized members who wished to express their opinions on the ELCA positions. During that meeting, the council concluded that members may want a fact guide to assist should any future changes in affiliation be proposed. The council charged a temporary Affiliation Task Force to address the practical issues for each of the three possibilities for Geneva Lutheran Church – 1) remain part of the ELCA, 2) join another Lutheran body, or 3) become an independent congregation. Stated another way, their purpose was to simply collect data on various points of congregational life in these organizations. The due date for their report to Exec Board was November 2, 2009. The task force convened with the following members: Pamela Kohn Andrews, Dan Bushroe, Cathy Bushroe, Mike Cranmer, Chris Meade, Lolita Moser, Cathy Mozden, Jamieson Olsen, Todd Steenson. Upon receiving the report, the November council meeting included several hours discussing what to do next. The following unanimous motion passed: “Based on the findings of the Task Force, the GLC Council recommends that the congregation seek affiliation with Lutheran Congregations in Missions for Christ(LCMC). Information and background material will be sent to each member and presented to the congregation." As stated in the motion, this packet begins to fulfill the second portion of the motion. The following pages represent a summary view of the Affiliation Task Force report. Further, this information along with additional background information will be available on Geneva Lutheran’s website: http://www.genevalutheran.org. We have decided to allow the congregation the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s to prayerfully consider what you believe to be the best option for Geneva Lutheran. In January, we will be scheduling an informational meeting in which ELCA & LCMC materials will be presented along with a Q & A session. It is our fervent hope we can discern a direction which to proceed. Should the feedback illuminate a clear direction, the council will call a special congregational meeting in February to vote on this matter. We cannot urge you enough to perform your due diligence on this matter by examining each organization and it’s stance on various issues. ONLY the congregation can vote to change affiliation, it cannot be accomplished by the council. We also ask that you pray not only for your own discernment, but also for the life and ministry of Geneva Lutheran. This is a pivotal junction in the life of our congregation. Your voice is needed.
